Chris Price expounded Matt 5:17-20 on how the laws and types in the Old Testament apply to the New Covenant believer. This is the third message on the sermon on the mount and is part of the second half of the teaching entitled “A New Kingdom” which began with the first 5 chapters of the book of Joshua in January.
The bible can be a very confusing book. Many brave folk have ventured into its pages and found themselves baffled by the time they get to Leviticus. So how is a person to understand the Old Testament and all its strange laws and commands? Jesus answers that question for us today.
- Jesus fulfills the law and the prophets:
The prohets were those who spoke the authoritative word of God to the people. In the prophets there is this longing, this anticipation, this looking forward to a day when God will visit his people, and take away their sins. In the prophets there is this looking forward to a messiah and a saviour and there are specific prophesies about this messiah in the scripture. Let’s look at some from the Prophets:
- From the line of David (Jeremiah 23:5-6)
- Died for the sins of people (Isaiah 53:4-5)
- Was executed next to criminals (Isaiah 53:9)
- And was put in a rich man’s tomb (Isaiah 9:9)
- Was called both God and man (Isaiah 9:6-7)
- Was born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2)
- Visited the Jerusalem temple before it was destroyed in 70 A.D. (Malachi 3:1)
- He was crucified (Psalm 22) an accurate prediction even before crucifixion existed
- Died in 33 A.D. (Daniel 9:25-26)
- And lastly rose from the dead (Psalm 16:10, Isaiah 53:11)
Who in all of history could have fulfilled these expectations?
- The law:
Confusion currounding the first five books of the bible (particularly Leviticus):
- The ceremonial law
- The civil law
- The moral law
- Righteousness exceeding the Scribes and the Pharisees?
Jesus calls his people to a different kind of righteousness.

Chris Price expounded on the Meaning and Application of Jesus’ comments concerning “Salt” and “Light” from Matt 5:13-17. This is the second message on the sermon on the mount and is part of the second half of the teaching entitled “A New Kingdom” which began with the first 5 chapters of the book of Joshua in January.
Discussion Questions for Small Groups:
- Did anything in the scripture stick out to you? Did anything in the message on Sunday catch your attention?
- How do you think the salt becomes salt less? Or in other words, ‘in what ways to Christians lose their salt in our culture’?
- Technically speaking, salt is a stable compound and can’t lose its saltiness. But salt can become mixed with other impurities that render it ineffective and even dangerous. Why do you think Christians are tempted to lose theirs distinctiveness by compromising their behaviour and beliefs?
- Why do some people not like the light (for help see John 3:19,20)?
- Do you think Christians can be salt and light through political processes? Why or why not?
- In what ways does this text challenge your personally?

Chris Price expounded on the beatitudes found in Matt 5:1-13 to begin the second half of the series entitled “A New Kingdom” which started with the first 5 chapters of the book of Joshua.
Discussion Questions for Small Groups:
- Why do you think the Sermon on the Mount is one of the most famous chunks of Jesus’ teaching?
- Did anything stick out to you as you read through the scriptures? Or did anything that Chris said on Sunday stick out to you?
- Who have you known in your life that has exhibited these be-attitude qualities? Do you have any stories that would help flush out the meaning of these beatitudes?
- What beatitude gives you the most trouble or causes the most tension in your soul?

Bob Yoshimaru speaks about Prayer L.I.F.E. and the 24/7 prayer week from Feb 15-22 (signup in the foyer or online here). Dave and his brother then lead the congregation in prayer and meditation.
Discussion Points for Small Groups (from Dave Barker):
- As you experienced yesterday, our services were different and there was not a specific preaching/teaching time. Discuss your reactions and responses to the Communion service, to the prayer groups during the service and to the sharing from the congregation of what the Lord has been doing/saying.
- Discuss 1 Cor 14 about what should happen “when you come together.”
- How has each person experienced contributing to small groups, services, prayer meetings in the past (either at Calvary or elsewhere)?
- How did contributing in this way enrich their lives?
- Should they be contributing more frequently, how and where?
- What should Calvary learn from the answers to these questions?
Also, discuss this week about the upcoming 24/7 Prayer week and how your group responds to this opportunity.
Chris and/or Richard will be communicating with you over the next couple of weeks while Irene and I are away.
